Greek and Roman myths, which Wendy views as adult fairy tales, often influence her art. For "Venus and Mars" Wendy was inspired by “Allegory of Peace, Mars and Venus” painted by Louis Jean Francois Lagrenee in 1770. Her painting depicts the love affair of Mars the Roman god of war and Venus the goddess of love and beauty under a star filled sky.
Roman mythology and astronomy is responsible for the name of most planets in our solar system. Mars, was named for the Roman god of war due to its reddish color which suggested blood and fire. Venus was named after the Roman goddess of beauty due to its brightness. Mars and Venus appear together in the sky every couple of years, with their next conjunction in February 2026
