Marianne was inspired to create this painting by the numerous deer that show up in her backyard, their gentle nature, and symbolism.

"In the background of the image is the story of the deer as a spirit animal. The lore is that deer would lure hunters into the forest and then transform them into deer, turning the hunter into the hunted. In essence, it was a message of non-violence. When deer arrive in our lives (in our yards), they remind us to be gentle; gentle with others and gentle with ourselves. Gentle, kind, observant, stillness. . . these are all traits of this totem. For me, it is an inward journey - to be gentle and kind with myself, to find beauty in the stillness and then from this place of stillness, observe what is around me." - Marianne
