Martha finds inspiration from stories found in myth and folklore about native plants, animals, and especially birds.

"The Druids of medieval times employed wild hares in prophecy by first catching them, then turning them loose to interpret the meaning of the path taken for their (the animal’s) escape. Legend has it that the barn swallow was the bird that stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans. In anger, the gods threw lightening bolts, scorching the bird’s tail feathers into its distinctive v-shaped appearance."
