"This crow was below my studio window, perhaps noshing on some bugs in an old log, when I tried to take pictures of it. I only got two photos before it saw me and took off, but a family of these cunning birds frequents the garden and I’m sure I’ll capture them again.
I don’t draw the wildlife I see from life because they move too much in the fleeting moment of their presence, and while I’m fumbling for pencil and paper they’ve gone. Instead of relying on photos from books and the internet for references I’ve started filming the animals I see and drawing from what I capture myself. The footage is usually done in a hurry, but that’s what makes for a more enriched painting experience in the studio. I have a direct connection to who/what I am painting."
