Still life, landscape, and the figure combine in Wendy Rouse’s paintings to present magic realism tempered by a hint of humor. Her detailed renderings incorporate assembled still lifes and their mirrored reflections , as well as the flora and fauna of northern Minnesota’s boreal forest. The illusion of space, volume, and light, as employed by the Old Masters of the Renaissance, lays an inspired foundation for her work.

Rouse earned a BFA from UMD and a MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art. Over the years she has enjoyed teaching art through the Duluth Community Schools, Duluth Art Institute, College of St. Scholastica, as well as private lessons.

"The things and ideas I paint are very autobiographical. The boreal forest, my daughter, toys, private jokes, objects with personal connections, and my love and reverence for the natural world. I paint with great detail as a way to understand them and my connection to them.”
